PETA names Grace Poe as 2024 Person of the Year in PH

THE People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia has named Senator Grace Poe as its 2024 Person of the Year in the Philippines.

PETA Asia Senior Vice President Jason Baker praised Poe for championing free spay and neuter services for cats and dogs, a vital step toward reducing the population of homeless animals.

“This initiative prevents the birth of countless animals destined to suffer on the streets. PETA Asia is honored to recognize Senator Grace Poe for her commitment to animal welfare,” Baker said in a press release.

He urged the public to follow her example.

Poe’s efforts extend to Senate Bill No. 2458, the Revised Animal Welfare Act, which seeks to fund free sterilization services, provide disaster relief for animals, and strengthen enforcement against cruelty.

The bill also proposes harsher penalties for violations and the deputization of Animal Welfare Enforcement Officers.

PETA highlighted Poe’s collaboration with animal welfare groups to enhance the bill, including a proposal to ban the importation of elephants.

In response to the recognition, Poe expressed gratitude, calling it a “badge of honor.” She reaffirmed her commitment to affordable spay-and-neuter services and emphasized the importance of compassion for animals.

Senate Bill No. 2458 remains under committee review, but Poe continues to advocate for its passage.
