PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed his condolences over the passing of Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile, describing him as one of the country’s “most enduring and respected public servants.”
In a Facebook post, the President said Enrile devoted more than five decades to public service and helped steer the nation through “some of its most challenging and defining moments.”
“Even in his final years, he remained brilliant, sharp, and firm in his belief that law and governance must always serve the Filipino people,” Mr. Marcos wrote.
The President added that Enrile’s death “closes an important chapter in our nation’s history,” but said the former Senate President leaves a legacy that “will never be forgotten — in law, in governance, and in the hearts of those he served.”
“Thank you so much, Tito Johnny. Goodbye and thank you for a life you wholeheartedly offered to the nation,” he added.
Enrile died on Nov. 13 at 4:21 p.m., his daughter Katrina confirmed in a Facebook post. He was 101.
The family has yet to announce details of the public viewing.
