Over 1.2M commuters benefit from 1st day of libreng sakay

MORE than 1.2 million commuters took advantage of free rides on MRT-3, LRT-1, and LRT-2 on April 30, the first day of the government’s Libreng Sakay initiative in celebration of Labor Day 2025.

The record-breaking ridership reflects strong public support for the government’s program, which offers four days of free train rides—from April 30 to May 3—aimed at easing the daily burden of Filipino workers and commuters.

President Marcos Jr. earlier described the initiative as a sincere gesture of gratitude to the nation’s workforce, recognizing their vital role in driving the country’s progress.

“This is our way of honoring the hardworking Filipino—by giving back, even in simple ways, to those who carry the weight of our economy each day,” the President said.

Commuters warmly welcomed the move, many saying the free rides helped ease financial strain, especially amid rising transportation costs.

The Department of Transportation lauded the smooth rollout and encouraged the public to continue availing of the free rides for the duration of the program.
