NAIA rolls out facial recognition check-in system at Terminal 1

TWENTY-four new self-service check-in kiosks equipped with facial recognition technology are now operational at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1.

The New NAIA Infrastructure Corp. (NNIC) said the kiosks are intended to reduce lines at check-in counters and make the departure process faster for travelers.

As of September 13, NNIC has served 51.7 million passengers and managed 283,771 flights since assuming airport operations in 2024—an increase of six percent in passenger traffic compared to the previous year.

NNIC noted that several operational adjustments—such as reorganizing aircraft parking areas, improving taxiway access, and removing long-abandoned aircraft—helped free up space and improve airside flow. These upgrades have also allowed NAIA to accommodate additional domestic and international routes through its 47 partner airlines.

A second OFW lounge at Terminal 1 is also set to open soon, complementing the existing facility at Terminal 3.

“Managing an airport of NAIA’s scale will always be demanding, but our first year shows that meaningful improvements can be achieved through coordinated work and consistent effort,” NNIC president Ramon Ang said. “Our teams, both on the ground and behind the scenes, have helped us serve more passengers, improve punctuality, and start modernizing the airport.”

He said NNIC will continue pursuing upgrades in collaboration with government partners to deliver a fully modernized NAIA.
