IT’S been three long years since the last ‘Traslacion’ was held in the country. It had to be put on hold due to the pandemic.
As such, it is expected that the enthusiasm of the devotees to the Black Nazarene will be high, we can only keep our fingers crossed that no untoward incident will mar the much-awaited comeback of the traditional procession held every 9th of January, as the highlight of the celebration of the miraculous Feast of the Black Nazarene.
Every year before the pandemic, the ‘Traslacion’ drew millions in attendance. This time around, the number is certainly expected to be a lot higher after the event had been missed for the past three years.
Quiapo Church authorities have issued prohibitions to ensure every participant’s safety.
Firstly, going up the carriage is not allowed primarily so as not to block the image which will be put in a glass encasement, and to ensure that spectators who have lined up will be able to take a good look at the Black Nazarene as it passes by.
Pushing, shoving, jostling and the like are also not allowed to avoid injuries or getting anybody hurt.
The attendees are likewise dissuaded from bringing huge bags or valuables such as jewelry and excessive amounts of money.
Bringing backpacks, bottled water unless in transparent containers and umbrellas are also being discouraged, along with the wearing of bull caps.
The use of transparent bags is also advised to make the owner undergo inspection swiftly and without hassle.
Children and those who are ill or physically incapacitated are also being urged not to join the procession. Instead, they are advised to watch from a safe distance.
The devotees are also advised to ensure they have eaten enough to last throughout the whole procession which will take long hours.
Devotees are allowed to throw their handkerchiefs or mini towels with which those on the carriage may wipe the image of the Black Nazarene.
Pulling of the rope or ‘andas’ will also be allowed provided it is being done properly and safely.
Last year, the holding of the ‘Walk of Faith’ to mark the Feast of the Black Nazarene proved to be successful, peaceful and orderly and it paved the way for the return of the ‘Traslacion’ this year.
We trust or hope that the same orderliness will be observed by those joining this year’s procession.
