Marcos vows transport reforms, accountability after SCTEx, NAIA tragedies

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has pledged to implement urgent reforms in the country’s transport system following recent fatal accidents.

In a video message, he extended condolences to the victims of two separate incidents: a deadly crash at the SCTEX toll plaza in Tarlac that claimed 10 lives, and another at NAIA Terminal 1 that resulted in two more deaths, including a child.

“These tragedies should never have happened,” Marcos said, vowing to hold accountable those responsible and to create a safer transport system for Filipinos.

He tasked Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon with taking immediate, decisive action.

The President emphasized the need for reform, including a comprehensive review of the driver licensing process to ensure only capable individuals are allowed to operate vehicles.

He also ordered a nationwide audit of bus operators to enforce safety and maintenance standards.

Additionally, Marcos directed the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to crack down on exploitative labor practices in the transport sector, particularly those causing driver fatigue due to excessive working hours.

“We must act—not just with sympathy, but with resolve,” he said, stressing that the loss of lives must lead to meaningful change and not be in vain.
