PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has called on Filipinos to commemorate Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) by embodying compassion, kindness, and selflessness—virtues he said are as heroic as battlefield courage.
In a message marking the annual April 9 observance, Marcos paid tribute to the bravery of Filipino and American troops who fought side by side in World War II, particularly during the 1942 Fall of Bataan.
“Their remarkable story continues to inspire us all as we carry on their work of protecting our nation and building a country worthy of their sacrifice,” he said.
Araw ng Kagitingan honors those who, despite dwindling resources, resisted the Japanese occupation and ultimately surrendered after months of intense battle.
But Marcos stressed that valor is not confined to war. “It is not solely about strength and resolve in the face of adversity but also about small acts of compassion, generosity, and kindness that create meaningful ripples of positive change,” he said.
He urged Filipinos to live out this spirit through service to others, affirming that true heroism lies in everyday actions that uplift the nation.
President Marcos will lead the official commemorative rites in Bataan and later at Camp Aguinaldo, where he will recognize beneficiaries of the Comprehensive Social Benefits Program for uniformed personnel.
