THE Marawi Compensation Board (MCB) has allocated over P148 million as compensation for the victims of the 2017 Marawi siege.
Nine months have passed since the Board started accepting applications for claims from the victims of the Marawi siege.
In a statement released by the Board thru the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), it stated that filed claims include Structural Property Claims (SPC), Death Claims (DC), Personal Property Claims (PC), Other Property Claims (OPC), and Multiple Claims (MC).
“Republic Act 11696 serves as a beacon of hope for those affected by the Marawi Siege, offering a legal framework to redress the injustices endured and provide monetary compensation,” said MCB Chairperson Atty. Maisara Dandamun-Latiph during the commencement of claims application.
During the compensation awarding, claimants expressed their gratitude for the government’s assistance to the victims.
“I am thankful for what my family received from MCB. Losing a child was so hard. I have endured so much. But I cannot do anything because it is God’s plan,” said Nora Culaste, a death claimant.
The Marawi siege, also referred to as the Marawi crisis and the Battle of Marawi, was a prolonged armed conflict lasting five months in Marawi, Philippines, commencing on May 23, 2017. It involved government security forces facing off against militants associated with the Islamic State (IS), notably the Maute and Abu Sayyaf Salafi jihadist groups. The battle stood as the lengthiest urban conflict in the contemporary history of the Philippines. (GP)
