Magnitude 6.4 quake jolts Davao Oriental; No tsunami threat reported

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Baganga, Davao Oriental, at 9:58 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The quake’s epicenter was located 341 kilometers east of Baganga, with a depth of 34 kilometers.

Phivolcs clarified that the earthquake does not pose a tsunami threat.

The tremor was felt in several areas across Mindanao.

Intensity III was reported in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, as well as in Tarragona and Boston in Davao Oriental.

Intensity II was recorded in various towns including Lingig, Baganga, Mati City, Manay, and Caraga in Davao Oriental; Glan, Sarangani; Tagum City, Davao del Norte; Davao City; Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur; and Tulunan, Cotabato.

Meanwhile, Intensity I was observed in Barobo and Tagbina, Surigao del Sur; Governor Generoso and Cateel, Davao Oriental; Digos City, Davao del Sur; and M’lang, Cotabato.

Phivolcs also listed instrumental intensities based on seismic instruments, with Intensity II recorded in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro, and Intensity I in several other locations, including Davao City, General Santos, and Kidapawan.

Aftershocks may follow, but significant damage is not expected.
