A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck La Union early Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
The tectonic tremor was recorded at 3:52 a.m., with its epicenter located 49 kilometers northwest of Luna, La Union, at a depth of 17 kilometers.
Reported intensities were as follows:
- Intensity V – Luna, La Union
- Intensity IV – Villasis, Pangasinan
- Intensity III – Baguio City
Phivolcs also recorded the following instrumental intensities:
- Intensity III – Bolinao and Bani, Pangasinan; Sinait and City of Vigan, Ilocos Sur; and Bontoc, Mountain Province
- Intensity II – City of Laoag, Ilocos Norte; Candon and Narvacan, Ilocos Sur; Bangar, La Union; City of Dagupan, Urdaneta, and Lingayen, Pangasinan
- Intensity I – Dinalupihan and Orani, Bataan; Baguio City; Obando and Calumpit, Bulacan; Claveria, Cagayan; San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte; Tagudin, Ilocos Sur; Malabon City; Guagua, Pampanga; Umingan and Sison, Pangasinan; Ramos and Bamban, Tarlac; and Subic, Iba, Masinloc, San Marcelino, and Cabangan, Zambales
Phivolcs explained that reported intensity is based on accounts of people who felt the shaking, while instrumental intensity is measured by instruments that detect ground acceleration.
No damage is expected from the quake, but aftershocks remain possible, the agency added. (PNA)
