Magnitude 5.0 earthquake jolts Ilocos Norte

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the northern part of Ilocos Norte on Sunday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.

In its Earthquake Information No. 1 bulletin, PHIVOLCS said the tremor occurred at 9:45 a.m. with the picenter located about 63 kilometers northwest of Currimao, Ilocos Norte.

The quake, which was tectonic in origin, had a depth of 10 kilometers.

Instrumental Intensity I was recorded in San Nicolas and Laoag City in Ilocos Norte, and in Sinait, Ilocos Sur.

As of this posting, PHIVOLCS said no damage or aftershocks are expected from the tremor. The agency continues to monitor the area for any developments.

Authorities reminded residents to stay alert and follow safety protocols in case of aftershocks.
