THE Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Friday urged local government units (LGUs) to complete preemptive or mandatory evacuations in high-risk areas by Sunday, as a possible super typhoon threatens to hit Luzon early next week.
“We are calling on all local chief executives to complete the evacuation of residents in high-risk areas no later than Sunday. Early evacuation saves lives,” the DILG said in a statement.
The directive follows President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s order for intensified disaster preparedness measures to ensure the safety of communities that may be affected by the approaching tropical cyclone Fung-wong (international name), which will be locally named Uwan.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), Fung-wong is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility by late Friday or early Saturday. It could rapidly strengthen into a super typhoon before making landfall over Northern or Central Luzon early next week.
The DILG reminded LGUs to prepare evacuation centers with adequate supplies and backup power and to ensure proper management of evacuees. It also emphasized the importance of continuous coordination with Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (RDRRMCs) and real-time public information drives, especially in communities prone to flooding, landslides, and storm surges.
The department also directed LGUs to strictly enforce a no-sailing policy and suspend tourism and outdoor activities in high-risk areas. Equipment and personnel must be mobilized for road clearing to guarantee unimpeded access for emergency and relief operations.
“We cannot be complacent. The next 48 hours are crucial for preparedness. We urge everyone to stay informed, follow local advisories, and cooperate with authorities,” the DILG said. (PNA)
