Kiko Barzaga removed from Philippine Army reserve force

THE Philippine Army has removed Cavite 4th District Rep. Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga, popularly known as “Cong Meow,” from its reserve force following a social media controversy involving political statements made while in military uniform.

Army spokesman Col. Louie Dema-ala said Barzaga’s “delistment” took effect on September 21, though the recommendation was formally announced on September 30.

“Mayroon kasing procedures. In-announce lang noong September 30 ‘yung kanyang recommendation, however, tumatakbo na ang investigation sa kanya. And September 21 niya kasi na commit ang offense,” Dema-ala said.

He explained that the move was in accordance with the Armed Forces of the Philippines General Headquarters’ Standard Operating Procedure No. 7. “As a result, Representative Barzaga loses his status as a member of the AFP Reserve Force and is no longer authorized to wear the military uniform under any circumstance,” Dema-ala added.

The Army clarified that the action was administrative and had nothing to do with Barzaga’s public service or personal conduct.

Barzaga joined the Army Reserve Force only in January this year, holding the rank of “Private” under the National Capital Region Regional Community Defense Group (NCRRDG).

His removal stemmed from social media posts where he appeared in uniform while commenting on alleged corruption in government and the supposed withdrawal of support from active military and police officers for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

“He was insinuating sedition with an attached photo of him in military uniform. Such statements endanger the Armed Forces’ position as a non-partisan organization,” Dema-ala said.
