House grieves with Myanmar, Thailand after massive quake; pledges support

THE House of Representatives, led by Speaker Martin Romualdez, expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with Myanmar and Thailand following the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake on March 28.

The quake claimed over 1,600 lives in Myanmar’s Mandalay region, injured thousands, and caused massive infrastructure damage.

In Bangkok, Thailand, at least 10 people were killed, with widespread structural destruction reported.

Romualdez extended heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and assured both nations of the Philippines’ readiness to help.

“We grieve with you. The Philippines, as part of the ASEAN family, stands ready to offer support in any way possible. In this moment of hardship, we are with you—as neighbors, friends, and one community,” he said.

He called for stronger regional cooperation on disaster resilience and urged lawmakers to craft legislation enhancing preparedness. He also commended the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Department of Health (DoH) for swiftly ensuring the safety of Filipinos in the affected areas.

Romualdez appealed to the international community to mobilize aid for Myanmar and Thailand, stressing the need for swift and effective support to help both nations recover.
