THE House of Representatives is considering a one-year suspension of PhilHealth members’ premium contributions to provide relief for Filipinos struggling with inflation and high prices, Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez announced Wednesday.
The proposal will depend on an inquiry into PhilHealth’s financial management set for next year. “This investigation aims to ensure every peso in PhilHealth’s coffers benefits its members—the hardworking Filipino people,” Romualdez stated.
If the inquiry reveals surplus or underutilized funds, the House will recommend:
- A one-year suspension of premium payments.
- Reducing premiums for members and employers.
- Expanding healthcare benefits, including hospitalization support and additional medical services, to achieve zero billing in hospitals.
Romualdez emphasized that PhilHealth’s resources must prioritize its members, adding, “If we can alleviate the burden of contributions without compromising its sustainability, we will do so.”
The inquiry is part of the House’s oversight power, which has driven recent reforms. Romualdez also highlighted ongoing efforts to combat rice hoarding and price manipulation, calling for a mega-task force to dismantle cartels and prosecute profiteers.
Addressing the nation, he urged unity: “Together, we will build a brighter, more prosperous, and united nation. Maligayang Pasko at Manigong Bagong Taon sa inyong lahat.”
