Hontiveros seeks stricter online gambling rules, calls out e-wallet firms

SENATOR Risa Hontiveros on Monday called for tighter regulation of online gambling, warning that outdated laws are enabling addiction through mobile apps and digital payment platforms.

Hontiveros said her office has received distressing pleas from families of individuals addicted to online gambling, with some falling into massive debt or even dying by suicide.

“Our laws are being left behind by the rapid evolution of technology,” she said. “That’s why we filed a bill to restrict access to online gambling, particularly through e-wallets and super apps.”

She pointed out that digital betting has become too easy, especially for the youth, who can gamble anytime via smartphones using popular e-wallet platforms such as GCash, Maya, and GrabPay.

While major casino operators have reaffirmed their commitment to responsible gaming, Hontiveros said digital platforms must be equally accountable.

“If big casinos can comply with regulations, then there should be no issue if we tighten access on digital platforms,” she said. “But why are e-wallet and super app companies silent despite widespread complaints about mobile gambling? I hope they begin to self-regulate.”

She stressed that regulating online gambling should go beyond legal compliance and reflect compassion and social responsibility.
