HIJOS del Nazareno Anpon ushers assigned at the Quirino Grandstand denied allegations that volunteers were given priority or allowed to cut the line during the Pahalik to the image of Jesus Nazareno.
The clarification followed the circulation of photos and online posts showing individuals wearing volunteer uniforms entering the grandstand in groups, triggering accusations that they had bypassed devotees waiting to kiss the image.
The ushers said no prioritization system was implemented during the activity. They explained that those seen entering earlier were volunteers who were allowed to pay their respects to the image at around 5 p.m. Wednesday as part of preparations before the Pahalik was formally opened to the public.
They added that the general public was allowed to participate starting at 7 p.m., following a Mass for volunteers held at 6 p.m.
Meanwhile, Manila Police District spokesperson Maj. Philip Ines said more than 5,000 devotees had gathered at the Quirino Grandstand as of 8 a.m. on Thursday, January 8, with the number expected to increase further as the Traslacion procession approaches.
