NGAYON na nahaharap ang buong mundo sa pagsirit ng presyo ng bigas, muling nanawagan si Senador Grace Poe na magtalaga na si Pangulong Bongbong Marcos ng full-time agriculture secretary na siyang tututok sa inaasahang mga problema sa bigas at iba pang isyu ng sektor pang-agrikultural.
Sa kanyang privileged speech nitong Martes, hinimok ni Poe si Marcos na magtalaga na ito ng full time agriculture secretary na kung maaari ay isang “farmer-in-chief”. Si Marcos ang tumatayo ring kalihim ng DA.
“May we suggest he appoint a full-time agriculture secretary? A farmer-in-chief, perhaps?” ani Poe.
Ginawa ng senador ang panawagan matapos ang desisyon ng India na itigil ang pag-export ng non-basmati white rice sa global market.
“This issue affects our nation’s gut and imperils the food on our plates. If left unaddressed, it will raise the cost of our meals, the anger in our bellies, and the hunger in our streets,” pahayag ni Poe.
“Our GDP (gross domestic product) may have grown to 6.4% in the first quarter of 2023, but it looks like our GNP or ‘Gutom na Pilipino’ also continues to grow. Ngayon pa lang, marami na sila,” pahayag pa ni senador.
Umangkat ang bansa ng 10,045 metriko toneladang bigas mula sa India. Ngunit, ayon ka Poe, hindi ito nakatitiyak na hindi matatamaan ang Pilipinas sa ginawang desisyon ng India na itigil ang pag-export ng kanilang bigas.
“Non-basmati rice accounts for roughly 81.2 percent of India’s total rice exports. This is the category subject to their ban. This means that, in one fell swoop, India has created a 17.86 million metric ton shortage in the global rice market. Those who will fill that gap can certainly charge a premium,” paliwanag ni Poe.
Kailangan ito ang matutukan nang husto ng kalihim na DA, kung paano tutugunan ang problemang idudulot ng desisyon ng India.
