Bishop urges Filipinos to wear white, put up white ribbons amid calamities

THE Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has called on Filipinos to join a national prayer and repentance movement as the country reels from a series of natural calamities.

In a statement on Saturday, CBCP President Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David urged churches and religious communities to participate in the “National Call to Prayer and Public Repentance.”

“Let us beg the Lord’s mercy on our people. Let us reiterate our invitation for our people to turn again to God with humble and contrite hearts,” Cardinal David said.

He encouraged the faithful to pray every Sunday or daily if possible until the celebration of the Solemnity of Christ the King later this year.

Bishop Jimmy Afable also suggested wearing white on Sundays throughout October and November, and placing white ribbons on homes, churches, and public spaces.

According to Afable, the gesture symbolizes the people’s longing for transparency, accountability, and good governance, as well as a collective prayer for mercy and renewal.

“May this season of prayer and repentance lead us to hope, healing, and the restoration of our common life in truth and justice. Let us beg the Lord to renew our nation and make us instruments of justice and peace,” Cardinal David added.
