The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has assured the public of its readiness to thwart any offensive actions by the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA), following the latter’s refusal to declare a holiday ceasefire with the government.
While no specific threats have been detected, AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla said the military remains on heightened alert to ensure the peaceful observance of Christmas and New Year.
“The CPP-NPA is no longer the formidable force it once was, but we are taking proactive steps to maintain peace and order,” Padilla said in a statement.
The AFP has significantly weakened the CPP-NPA’s operations, with their active guerrilla fronts reduced from seven to just one. “We are only waiting for the final declaration that they are completely dismantled,” Padilla said.
According to the official, the dwindling number of armed rebels means they are incapable of mounting large-scale offensives. However, the AFP is prepared to repel any attempt to disrupt the holiday season.
“We are ready for any eventuality, especially during this time of year,” Padilla added.
