97 charged over Sept. 21 violent protests in Manila

THE Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) has filed criminal complaints against 97 individuals, including alleged financiers and instigators, involved in the violent anti-corruption protests in Manila on September 21.

In a press briefing at Camp Crame on Monday, CIDG Director Maj. Gen. Robert Morico II said the charges — inciting to sedition, conspiracy and proposal to commit sedition, and sedition — were filed before the Department of Justice on October 28.

“The investigation is continuing, and in the next few days, we will again file cases against the instigators and supposed people behind the violent incident in Recto and Mendiola,” Morico said.

Authorities have identified several individuals from circulating videos who allegedly incited violence, including calls to burn Malacañang Palace, he added.

Meanwhile, PNP acting chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the police are already gearing up for nationwide protests on November 30, ensuring tighter coordination with security agencies.

The PNP’s focus now, he said, is on three priorities: monitoring protest groups, reinforcing security barriers and surveillance systems with local government units, and deploying additional security forces.

“We continuously monitor these personalities and groups that may cause trouble. That’s why we filed cases,” he said.
