SEVEN people were killed and 11 others injured after the powerful earthquakes — with magnitudes 7.4 and 6.8 — struck Davao Oriental and nearby provinces on October 10, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Saturday.
In its latest situational report, the NDRRMC said all fatalities were recorded in the Davao Region, while one of the injured was reported in Caraga.
The earthquakes affected 3,519 families, or 8,436 individuals, across the Davao and Caraga regions. Of these, 2,468 families — equivalent to 7,915 people — are currently staying in evacuation centers.
Initial assessments showed that 28 houses sustained damage, with five totally destroyed. The NDRRMC also reported that five road sections and one bridge in Davao Region, Soccsksargen, and Caraga remain impassable due to quake-related damage.
The magnitude 7.4 offshore earthquake struck Davao Oriental early Friday morning, followed hours later by a magnitude 6.8 quake in a nearby offshore area.
The tremors prompted tsunami warnings in coastal communities, which were later lifted after monitoring showed no significant sea level rise.
Authorities continue to conduct assessment and response operations in affected areas to ensure the safety of residents and restore access routes.
