FOUR Filipinos remain missing in Myanmar following a devastating magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck the country on Friday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed on Sunday.
“The latest update is that four Filipinos are unaccounted for, not just two,” DFA Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega said in an interview on dzBB.
The powerful quake which was also felt in Thailand has claimed the lives of more than 1,600 people while several others were hurt and missing in Mynmar.
Among the missing are a married couple who lived in a building that collapsed during the earthquake.
“Two of them were together in a building that served as their residence. Unfortunately, it collapsed. All of the missing individuals are professionals, including teachers and office workers,” De Vega explained.
So far, no relatives or contacts from the Philippines have reached out to the embassy for information on the missing Filipinos. De Vega urged the public to continue praying for their safe recovery.
In neighboring Thailand, where a large number of Filipinos reside, no incidents related to the earthquake have been reported just yet.
“Fortunately, no buildings collapsed there, and the situation is gradually returning to normal,” De Vega added.
