4 Chinese warships spotted off Balabac, Palawan

THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said it monitored four Chinese navy warships in Balabac Strait off Palawan on Wednesday.

AFP public affairs chief Col. Xerxes Trinidad, however, pointed out that international vessels usually pass through the maritime area.

The warships– the PLAN destroyer Luyang III (DDG-168), the frigate Jiangkai II (FFG-570), the destroyer Renhai (CG-105), and the replenishment oiler Fuchi (AOR-907)– were spotted transiting 12 nautical miles off Palawan.

The vessels “responded accordingly” when radio challenged.

“As part of standard operating procedure, these vessels were challenged and they responded accordingly,” Trinidad said in a statement.

“Our capability to monitor and respond to such activities is a testament to our commitment to maritime domain awareness and the protection of our territory, sovereignty, and sovereign rights. Rest assured, the AFP remains vigilant in safeguarding our maritime interests,” the official added.
