17 OFWs arrested in Qatar over protest rally secured provisional release

SEVENTEEN overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) detained in Qatar for participating in an alleged illegal protest have been provisionally released, Malacanang confirmed Thursday.

Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said the release of the 12 men and five women followed President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s immediate directive for the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), and the Philippine Embassy in Doha to provide legal and welfare assistance.

The OFWs were arrested on March 27 at a resort in Doha, along with three minors who were promptly released.

The 17 were freed in two separate batches early morning on April 2 but remain under investigation and are not allowed to leave Qatar.

While no formal charges have been filed, Cacdac assured continued legal support and welfare monitoring. Embassy officials and legal counsel have visited to check on the OFWs’ condition.

Cacdac stressed the President’s concern for their safety and well-being, reminding OFWs to observe host country laws, particularly regarding public assemblies.

“The Marcos administration stands committed to the protection and welfare of OFWs, regardless of their situation,” he said.
